About Us
Laboratory animals have contributed immensely to our knowledge of biological structures and function. They are used extensively in the safety evaluation of drugs, herbs, foods and chemicals, and in a broad variety of pharmacological investigations. The response of laboratory animals to a given regimen or treatment can be influenced by many factors. Nnamdi Azikiwe University Animal Research Ethics Committee has instituted guidelines and policies aimed at enhancing the integrity of scientific research works that use and manipulate animals as subjects.
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to have an oversight function for the welfare of animals in our facilities by promoting humane animal care and use in teaching, research and testing.
Vision:
To enlighten all the stake holders of Animal use in our institution about the ethics in animal research.
Policies Guiding the Use of Animals in Nnamdi Azikiwe University
⦁ No animal will be used in our institution without prior permission and approval by the members of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Animal Research Ethics Committee (NAU-AREC).
⦁ That anyone who wishes to use laboratory animals for research must undergo Training on Animal Handling before embarking on the research.
⦁ That everyone that uses animals in our institution should be made to know that there are laws against cruelty to animals.
⦁ That anyone who violates rule 1 and 2 above will be sued and the University reserves the right to stop such work immediately with any available law enforcement agent.
PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING ETHICAL APPROVAL/CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE
⦁ Proceed to First Bank and make your payment. Photocopy the teller in an A4 paper.

⦁ Fill the Application Form, submit online and Print a copy.
⦁ Make 3 photocopies of your filled Application Form and Proposal. Staple them together and submit the three copies to NAU-AREC Office.

3) Non-Staff/Student N20,000.00
4) Staff Members’ Ethical Clearance for Research Project N5,000.00
5) Staff Members’ Animal Handling Training N5,000.00
6) Postgraduate Ethical Clearance for Research Project N10,000.00
7) Postgraduate Animal Handling Training N7,000.00
8) Undergraduate Ethical Clearance for Research Project N5,000.00
9) Undergraduate Animal Handling Training N4,000.00
